Use Affiliate Marketing To Be Your Own Web-Writing Client

One of the best ways to make money online is to become your own client. What I mean by this is that you create your own product and write your own copy selling it. However, you might not have your own product and that’s where today’s article comes in … It’s all about becoming your own client — even if you don’t have a product to sell.

If you’ve been online long at all, you’ve likely run across the term “affiliate marketing.” You might not know exactly what it is, but you might already have a bad taste in your mouth when you hear it. That’s because you’ve probably been exposed to a lot of hype-y products claiming you can make a fortune working online.

The truth is, you can make a lot of money with affiliate marketing — without deadlines, clients, or cold-calling — and without pushing over-hyped products — you just have to know how to do it.

Before we jump into how to make money with affiliate marketing — and becoming your own web-writing client — let’s take a step back and begin with a closer look at what affiliate marketing is …

Affiliate Marketing

An affiliate is someone who markets a product for another company and makes a commission when a sale is made.

And, there are three ways to earn money:

  • Per click — Whenever someone clicks an affiliate ad, you get paid.
  • Per sale — Whenever someone buys something from your affiliate, you get paid a commission.
  • Per lead — Whenever someone leaves his or her name and email address with an affiliate, you get paid.

The best way to think of an affiliate is like an independent salesperson who sells an item for a company and gets a cut of the sale.

    Hi Christina -

This is great! Sounds like a Money Making Website without all that troublesome content!

Am I correct that you set up a web page devoted to a product line, like vacuum cleaners, and simply list links to many affiliate products of that type… is it just that simple? Except you want a product that people will need to reorder frequently like coffee filters (or whatever). And the freebie that you offer in exchange for the name… that’s a white paper on how to find the best coffee filter? And, I assume, you obtain these product listings through ClickBank? Are there others?

This seems like an interesting alternative to setting up a MMW — one that pays off more quickly? And you save your MMW for the topic you feel more passionate about/can develop more content for? Or am I missing something?

    Thanks!
    Jeanie

There are others – I worked with ShareASale last year and really liked them (and I do have an affiliate link for them if anyone wants it). I ran an advertising banner provided by the company on a client’s website and got some success from it. I thought of it as a preview to my MMW, though, instead of as a replacement for it.

    Christina,

This is the first time I’ve ever read an article that succintly explains what and how of affiliate marketing. And the comments further help clarify.

    Thank you!

  4. Hi Jeanie, Jennifer and Jennifer,

I do have a few more articles coming up in this series that will help explain things more. But I think of affiliate marketing as an addition to my MMW (kinda like Jennifer Adams said), rather than a replacement. I’m not sure you’d be able to get enough traffic if you only listed affiliate links on a webpage. Hopefully my other articles will help answer your questions.

    Best,
    Christina

The idea of making million by putting up product review pages with product names in the url is the subject of Google Sniper 2.0 by George Brown. The real time video of a user going through the process of selecting a product, writing the blog copy, posting pictures, etc. is worth the price of admission!

Donna – that looks like a pretty good lead. Very compelling… have you set up one of these pages? Love this topic, Christina!
