15 Minutes to Fame: Moving Mountains

If you’re familiar with author Jack Canfield or if you’ve ever worked with a personal coach, you probably know about “tolerations.” They are those things in your life that aren’t the way you’d like them to be, but that you keep putting off fixing either because you don’t know where to start or because the task seems insurmountable.

Often tolerations are things around the house that need fixing or cleaning. But, sometimes they are work-related.

Maybe you’ve got a personal work project like a Money-Making Website that is sitting on your computer half-done that makes you give a little sigh of resignation every time you think about it. Or, maybe you’ve got a project looming that you know you should have started already and you get a little sick to your stomach when you move it forward from yesterday’s to-do list to today’s.

The problem with tolerations is that they can affect your entire mindset without you even realizing it. By letting things stack up, or leaving something unhandled, you feed a defeated mindset. And that makes being creative, being innovative, and taking the initiative more difficult.

I had a toleration that I handled this past week, and I can’t believe how much better I feel. It was just a matter of setting a day aside and making an agreement with myself that if I only got one thing done that day, it would be to eliminate the toleration.

Fixing things took less time than I thought (that’s often the case with a toleration … it seems like it will take so long because you have so much emotional energy invested in avoiding it). And, I feel so much lighter, my thoughts feel quicker … I’m ready to conquer the world.

Today we’re going to talk about another important component of the direct-response package — the “lift note.”

Lift notes are those little inserts that accompany a sales letter inside the direct mail envelope. They can be small little 3” x 5” folding notes, or they can be three-page color brochures. It’s all up to you and what you need in order to reinforce the overall message being presented in the package.

The online equivalent of a lift note can come in many variations — from brief email promotions to website space ads to the landing page in a PPC campaign. These can all perform the same function as a traditional printed lift note, and use similar rules when it comes to the copy.

How to Create a Cover Letter that Gets Noticed

Congratulations! You found the perfect job opportunity, and you’re ready to apply.

You’ve spent hours working on your resume, crossing all the “t’s” and dotting all the “i’s.” You double-checked the grammar and spelling a dozen times.

Yep, it’s ready to submit.

Not so fast! Have you put the same level of care into your cover letter?

As you know, if you’ve spent any time applying for jobs recently, a cover letter allows you to tell the hiring managers in your own words how qualified you are for the job. This goes for all sorts of positions, including full-time jobs and short-term freelance opportunities.

The great news is that, as a writer, you should be a natural at “selling yourself” with words.

The right cover letter gives you a better chance of getting your resume seen.

Hiring managers are very busy and usually receive hundreds of resumes for each job opening. If your cover letter doesn’t grab their attention right away, they won’t even look at your “perfect” resume.

So, what does your cover letter need to stand out?

First of all, keep in mind that many hiring managers typically only read the first paragraph of a cover letter. If they’re not interested at that point, they move on to the next resume.

So just like with a sales letter, the lead of your cover letter has to convince them to keep reading.
