Thanks, Henry. This was terrific. I had been wondering how to do these things. Now I'll have to give it a try.

Sure. The purpose of this video was to get beginners started quickly for free. For more advanced video, you're going to need to make a decent investment...

I'm on a Macbook Pro with some RAM and memory upgrades which is a great machine for video... I use Screenflow ($99, mac only) as my screencasting software and Final Cut Express ($199, mac only) as my video editing. Screenflow has the option to record with the built-in monitor video camera along side the screencast.

For more advanced screen capture on a PC you need to purchase Camtasia ($199). I know it's pretty good software and the last time I checked they have a free trial period.

For external cameras, if you want to start cheaply I recommend using a Kodak Zi8 ($179) and a wireless lapel mic (about $89). You'll probably also need some video editing software. I hear that Adobe Premiere Elements (about $99) is adequate software for most people's needs.

Just to clarify, my main video experience is on a mac, so my recommendations for Camtasia and Adobe are just from what I've heard.

Can we hear some recommendations for software to record a video when it will be a talking head AND the computer screen? From reviewing screenr.com I understand it to be ALL on the computer screen (Powerpoint).

Hey Don, A screencast is a recording of your computer screen so you don't need any equipment other than a computer and a high-speed internet connection. Just go to screenr.com and click record!
