What’s New This Week… Up Your Marketing Awareness

The topics covered on the site this week ranged from five things you can do to be a wealthier web writer to developing a better understanding of your marketing awareness to developing a system for conducting research.

The topics may seem varied, but they all contained a single theme. Remaining aware of where you are, where you’re going, what you plan to do to get there and how much time it should take.

By becoming a more aware businessperson, you’ll begin to see a number of changes in your freelance career. First, you’ll have a much better idea of what your next step is each and every time you’re faced with that decision. Second, you’ll begin to notice things like ways you could help a client to do better. And third, you’ll start to see opportunities in just about everything.

By becoming more aware, you’ll act with purpose and that’s when you begin to see more progress and success.

Wake Up Your Marketing Mind

If you haven’t read Mindy’s Monday issue of the Reality Blog, you should read it now. In it Mindy talks about the four stages of marketing awareness. I know a lot of freelancers who get stuck in stage 2 or stage 3—you either know you need to market yourself, but aren’t sure what to do or you know what you need, but you aren’t sure how to do it. Being aware of where you are can help you get to where you want to go.

After that, you should read John Torre’s post this week. In it he details five steps you can take on every website project to make the site more successful. If you’re having a hard time getting your marketing efforts off the ground, apply these five steps to your own website and you’ll make faster progress and see better results.

Finally, if you missed Nick Usborne’s event on August 23rd, check out the highlights in the Roving Report or listen to the playback for the full event. This focuses on finding the right niche for your services. I can’t think of a better, more important step to help you become more aware of your market, your marketing strategy and the next steps you need to take.

Making a big picture marketing plan…

Now for this week’s plan… Monday was a holiday, so you only have four days to stoke your momentum and make significant progress toward building your business.
Tuesday: Choose your niche. Listen to Nick’s webinar or read through the Roving Report. Sight in with laser precision on a niche for your services. Write it down in big bold letters and stick it somewhere you can see it. I asked you to do this two weeks ago. If you haven’t done it yet, it’s time to do it now.

Wednesday: Do a marketing brain dump. This is where you sit down and make a list of all the different ways you feel like you should be marketing yourself. That “should” feeling is a big hang-up for freelancers. When you feel like you should be doing a million different things, it makes it hard to focus on one thing and do it well.

Thursday: Look over your marketing brain dump and pick one thing to accomplish or one strategy to implement by the end of the month. Hint: If you don’t have a website yet, that’s where you should start.

Friday: Make a detailed task list for the one thing you chose yesterday. Think of every step you’ll need to take to accomplish your goal. Prioritize them and then make a schedule that will get you to your goal by the end of the month.

That’s all for this week. Remember to keep moving forward with awareness, purpose and focus.

Enjoy the week!
