The Reality Blog: Fire Starting in Austin

Dear Web Writer,

I’m blown away by what’s happening in Austin this week at the Web Intensive.

It’s not just that we have great speakers, or a scenic venue on the Colorado River. It’s not even the mass surge of energy coming off attendees — something that always happens at live events.

What’s absolutely blowing me away is this:

SO many attendees here — repeat attendees I’ve gotten to know over the years — have ARRIVED in the web-writing world.

One’s been offered a long-term contract with a major marketer. Another launched her own consulting business and has prospects beating at her door. Yet another has found a niche she loves and glows when she mentions her steady stream of clients.

It’s heartening, and exciting. These aren’t writers who busted out of the gate and met immediate success.

Instead, they’ve been studying and writing and building their business for years. The number of years vary — some have been at it for five years, some for three, some for just one.

What’s most exciting about all this is that it’s PROOF you will make it in the web-writing world if you just keep on going.

Don’t worry yourself here with the concept of diminishing returns. Sure, you could argue whether it’s worth it to keep plugging if you won’t get anything out of it for another couple of years.

But that’s not what’s happening here at all. The writers who have “made it” have been getting paid for their writing for a while now. They’ve also spent the past several years pursuing their passion of writing and getting the hang of freelance living.

The difference though, is, that now they have their “dream jobs” in terms of web writing. They’ve arrived in their own eyes. And it’s a total joy to see.

The point I’m trying to make here is that you don’t have to do anything extraordinary to guarantee you’ll make it in this business.

Well, I take that back. There is one extraordinary thing they’re doing. And it’s exactly what worked for me when I first started here at the Reality Blog, three years ago. It’s this:

Keep showing up.

The success stories here all have one simple thing in common: they keep showing up. They keep listening and learning, asking questions, and practicing their writing. They keep believing in themselves, and pressing forward.

So, keep showing up, and your fire will light. It’ll work. I guarantee.

And when you’ve risen to the level of success you dream about, I want to hear your story.

To your success,
