Roving Report: Writing Better Home Page Copy

Writing Studying Working Planning Concept

Each month, Wealthy Web Writer’s Managing Editor Heather Robson hands out a Practice Assignment to members.

As she explained,

“Each month, we’ll provide a made-up assignment brief. The industries will be picked at random. The clients are completely fictional. And the assignments will vary.”

Writing these assignments will help you up your writing game. To improve even faster, you can submit them for review in a live webinar — watch the Wealthy Web Writer site for the Practice Assignment details each month.

Heather received about three dozen submissions for the first assignment, writing homepage copy, and she randomly chose five for review.

For those who didn’t get the benefit of the live review, Heather pointed out that there are other ways to get feedback. Ask for feedback in the Facebook group Online Copywriters, or share it with your own network of writing friends or an accountability or mastermind group.

“Feedback is a little scary, but absolutely useful,” Heather reminded us. Her goal in these Practice Assignment review sessions is to show the writers what was strong in their writing, and to point out what could be stronger.

The full brief for today’s Practice Assignment is below, and you can review the entire webinar HERE.

Now, let’s take a look at some of the assignment submissions and learn from what Heather had to say about them.

Susanna Perkins

Susanna was dragged back, kicking and screaming, into freelancing after losing her job in the banking meltdown in March, '09. One 3-month stint in an appalling temp job persuaded her to get serious about establishing herself as web writer. In March, 2012, she moved to a small town in Panama with her husband and three small dogs. After enjoying the writer's life in the culture of "buenas" and "mañana" for 2-1/2 years, she's returned to the US. At least for now.
