Roving Report: An Interview with Successful Copywriter, Liz Farr

Men that get star . Mixed media

Liz Farr is fairly new to the freelance copywriting world, but she’s really been crushing it.

Managing Editor Heather Robson interviewed Liz during a recent Wealthy Web Writer teleconference. Heather wanted to learn more about the choices Liz has been making that “set her on this kind of crazy, successful path.”

You’ll find the entire interview HERE.

A Little Background

Liz spent 15 years as a CPA, doing mostly tax and audit work. After putting in all that time, though, she got to a point where she felt like she had to get out of accounting.

Yet today, as a full-time freelance writer, Liz is still involved in accounting. But instead of doing taxes for people, she’s writing marketing content for accountants and businesses that serve the accounting industry.

Copywriting appealed to Liz because she wanted to do something that didn’t require her to go back to college and get another degree.

“I had always gotten kudos at work for my writing,” she explained. “They always assigned me reports and persuasive letters” because they recognized she had some talent in that area. (That’s rare among accountants!)

Liz came across AWAI’s Accelerated Program for Six-Figure Copywriting and found herself drawn to web writing and writing in the B2B (Business-to-Business) space. “I’m very right-brained and focused on the facts,” she stated, “which fits in with being an accountant.” It also makes B2B writing a logical choice.

Initial Success

Liz started marketing her services by sending prospecting emails, handing out business cards at networking events, and connecting with people on LinkedIn.

She told us she was spinning her wheels until “one day, a podcast drifted through my LinkedIn feed.” The podcast was an interview with a young man in New Zealand whose business put together websites for accountants all over the English-speaking world.

“I really liked what he was saying — all the things I’d been thinking,” Liz noted.

Susanna Perkins

Susanna was dragged back, kicking and screaming, into freelancing after losing her job in the banking meltdown in March, '09. One 3-month stint in an appalling temp job persuaded her to get serious about establishing herself as web writer. In March, 2012, she moved to a small town in Panama with her husband and three small dogs. After enjoying the writer's life in the culture of "buenas" and "mañana" for 2-1/2 years, she's returned to the US. At least for now.
