Reality Blog: How I Turned a Simple Survey Into Two Day’s Work

Have you ever had a great idea and thought, “This will be so easy, I’ll do it now. Won’t take long…”? I had a burst of inspiration a while ago, but it didn’t quite turn out as planned…

My latest scheme was to write a quick visitor survey.

As visitors were leaving my Money-Making Website, the survey would pop up. Hopefully, a handful of people would fill out the survey and I’d learn more about my audience. Easy. A half a day’s work at most.

Well, it didn’t quite turn out that way…

A Simple Plan

In an earlier article, I spoke about how I needed to know my audience better and strategies for achieving this. One approach is to simply ask. Who better to ask than the actual humans visiting my website?!

The best part was, I knew exactly how to make this happen:

  1. Use Optinmonster to build a popup. I’ve used this app many times before, so it was totally familiar. Or so I thought. More on this later.

  2. Use SurveyMonkey to create the form. This was new to me, however it looked pretty intuitive.

  3. Embed the SurveyMonkey survey into the popup. This way, the visitor would have the survey right there in front of them. No extra clicks to other sites… so less visitor drop-offs.

I thought I was in for a smooth ride. But then I added another step. A fatal mistake…
