Rebecca and Helen on the Hot Seat

The Challenge

In a recent Challenge, Wealthy Web Writer members were asked to:

  • Look into different goal-setting methods
  • Pick one method, and use it to set their own goals for 2019
  • Write “the story of their year”

A single winner was chosen from all the submissions, and that person is Rebekah Mays. Part of her prize was the opportunity to sit down for an hour and get personal advice from two dynamic advisers, Rebecca Matter and Helen Buttery.

Rebecca Matter is the Founder of Wealthy Web Writer, President of AWAI, and she’s an experienced copywriter and marketer. She also hires copywriters, so she knows exactly what clients need from both sides of the fence.

Helen Buttery is AWAI’s Vice President of Sales and Marketing where she loves helping members create successful freelance businesses and enjoy the writer’s life.

To avoid confusion, Rebecca Matter explained that she would be referred to as “Reb” during this conversation.

Reb led off by explaining that Rebekah “has a solid plan for the year, with some really good goals.”

Rebekah’s Big Goal for 2019

Rebekah explained that she’d looked at different strategies and was intrigued with the idea of a set point. “We all have a set point where we’re comfortable.” She continued, “It could be a temperature, a weight, or our income. We’re just comfortable in some range.”

Rebekah realized she’d been “okay” making a low amount of money, and she started wondering, “What if I expanded that idea? What if I pushed myself into something that was not as comfortable, and that seems like a lot of money?”

Following that line of thought, she thought maybe, by transforming her thoughts, she could “end up doing things that could bring more success.”

She settled on the target of earning $7,000 a month. “It was pretty scary to think about making that much on a monthly basis by the end of the year,” she admitted.

That’s the end goal she’s moving toward.

Susanna Perkins

Susanna was dragged back, kicking and screaming, into freelancing after losing her job in the banking meltdown in March, '09. One 3-month stint in an appalling temp job persuaded her to get serious about establishing herself as web writer. In March, 2012, she moved to a small town in Panama with her husband and three small dogs. After enjoying the writer's life in the culture of "buenas" and "mañana" for 2-1/2 years, she's returned to the US. At least for now.
