Roving Report: A Live Review of Homepage Copy

Review Time Business Concept , Time For Review , Business Team H

Wealthy Web Writer is all about helping you hone your skills — both writing and business — to achieve better results as a freelance web writer.

To help with this, most months, Managing Editor Heather Robson challenges members to submit a sample assignment for review. Then she randomly selects a few submissions to review, live, during a webinar.

This month, the assignment was to write copy for a homepage, and she selected four submissions to review live during this presentation.

During the live reviews, Heather’s focus is always to highlight what works best in each submission and suggest changes to make the writing stronger.

The Brief

Here’s the assignment brief for the fictitious company, Writer’s Best Friend.

Heather reminded us that this homepage isn’t trying to make a sale. Instead, the goal is to encourage visitors to try the free version of the software. That allows the company to begin nurturing a relationship with visitors that may lead them to purchase the paid version in the future.

Submission #1

As always, Heather started by reading the submission aloud, and then addressing specific points.

Susanna Perkins

Susanna was dragged back, kicking and screaming, into freelancing after losing her job in the banking meltdown in March, '09. One 3-month stint in an appalling temp job persuaded her to get serious about establishing herself as web writer. In March, 2012, she moved to a small town in Panama with her husband and three small dogs. After enjoying the writer's life in the culture of "buenas" and "mañana" for 2-1/2 years, she's returned to the US. At least for now.
