Member Update: Spring Waits for No One

Women practicing stillness on a dock

I was driving home from dropping moving boxes off to my daughter — she has to move home from college early because of the pandemic — and I noticed the plum trees are blossoming… and absolutely gorgeous.

In my backyard, the daffodils have burst forth in all their bright yellow glory.

And I’m waking every morning to bird song.

It’s official. Spring is here.

And even with social distancing and lockdowns, you can still go outside. And you should.

(At least you can go outside in most of the places I’ve checked the rules for, but check your own local regulations to be sure.)

Fresh air and sunshine are good for the soul. They’re mood boosters. And they’re good for your health too.

While we’re all cooped up and limiting our social interactions, there are plenty of things you can do that are more or less free and that respect the social distancing guidelines. And now that spring is here, these outside activities are not only good for you, they’re fun too!

You can go for a walk. Walk your dog. Walk with your family. Or just take some time to yourself.

You can have a picnic. You can even meet up with a friend. Just agree to each bring your own meal and forego the hugs. Otherwise, you can laze in a park (six feet apart from each other) and catch up, tell stories, have a good laugh.

You can go for a bike ride. Be honest, do you have a bike collecting dust in the garage? Well, clean it up, pump up the tires, and head out for a ride.

Or head down to the park for a bit of frisbee with your family. Maybe a game of HORSE at the local basketball hoop. You’ll be moving, having fun, and taking in the great weather (at least I hope it’s great where you are!).

And don’t forget about working outside. Now that spring is here, you can take your laptop out on the porch or the patio and enjoy a change of scene while getting a little writing or marketing done.

It’s a weird and difficult time right now. Spending time outdoors may be just what you need to keep your spirits up… and to give your immune system a boost, as well. So take advantage of the fact that spring is here.

Important Note: I am not recommending anyone go against current recommendations about social distancing or current guidelines about staying at home. Make sure you know the best practices for your area and follow them. The sooner we stop the spread of this thing, the sooner we can get back to our usual activities.

Stay safe and stay well!
