Reality Blog: Chasing My Tail Like a Mad Dog with an Itch

Coffee, notebook, and glasses

Okay, I admit it. I’m frustrated.

Frustrated by the endless barriers to developing an effective affiliate marketing strategy. It seems no matter which way I turn, I’m stumbling over new affiliate marketing challenges.

My gut is saying to abandon affiliate marketing altogether. My patience has run out.

Why? Because it seems my niche and affiliate marketing aren’t a good fit in Australia.

Chasing My Tail

I’ve mentioned the challenges of affiliate marketing in Australia in a few previous posts. If Amazon was a force in the online shopping industry in Australia, then life would be easier.

But Amazon doesn’t even rate here in Australia.

So why do I think my niche and affiliate marketing aren’t a good fit? Well, let’s go through what affiliates I’ve managed to find, their commissions, and how successful they are.

Then you can make up your own mind… and share your views with me in the Comments.

Firstly though, a reminder of our niche topic. It’s “Expert advice on outback travel in Australia.” We cover:

  • Detailed posts on travel destinations
  • Reviews of products related to remote travel
  • How to prepare for long-term travel
  • How to survive in remote locations

I’ve searched for the following affiliate products to match our topics:

  • Organized outback package tours to destinations we write about
  • Camping gear and accessories for 4x4s
  • Products we review
  • Products related to travel preparation and survival

We’ll break these down.

  • I’m a newbie – but I think you’re not looking at the big picture. I subscribe and look at your blog, only occasionally (sorry). But why are people reading your blog? Is it because they’re interested in Travelling around Australia or it that they are interested in being able to lead a lifestyle like yours? For me, it’s both.

    • Hi Laine,

That’s an interesting thought and you’re right. I’m focused more on the travel aspect whereas I should probably be doing a whole lot more on the lifestyle aspect. This is something Heather and Nick highlighted in a Reality Blog interview last year. I’ve made a start with this but should probably expand the lifestyle aspect much further.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention!
