Reality Blog: Keeping Focused on the Road Ahead, Despite the Distractions

By now you’re probably aware of my goal as 2020 Reality Blogger… to build an email list of at least 1,000 subscribers.

2020 is halfway gone. And what a crazy year it’s been so far!

So, how’s my goal looking after six months?

What follows is a midyear progress report on my email list-building efforts so far… some wins, a few losses, and a major shift in mindset.

Let’s have a closer look.

Attracting New Subscribers

Here’s a graph of subscribers by month, back to April last year.

After encouraging signs, the rate of new subscribers is levelling off. Note: these figures include unsubscribes.

After promising signs in January-March, the rate of new subscribers has levelled off. It seems to be back to where it was last year.

What’s going on? Perhaps we have a high unsubscribe rate?

Not really.

Our unsubscribe rate is 0.3%. MailChimp lists an average unsubscribe rate of 0.24% for our industry sector, so we’re in the ballpark.

Instead, we need to look at how many new subscribers are signing up each month.

As you can see, the trend is definitely down. Hmmm…

Right, here’s what I could do to reverse the trend.
