Effective keywords are critical if you want a web page to rank organically in the search engines.
So, how do you uncover effective keywords for organic search (or even for paid ads)? After four years of writing hundreds of pages for our Money-Making Website and building other websites, I’ve developed a standard five-step approach to keyword research.
Maybe you’ll find it useful.
Step 1. Research Your Competitors
The first step is to research your competitors. I’ll only touch briefly on this topic here, as it can get quite involved.
In summary, these are the questions to ask of any competitor’s website:
- What keywords are they ranking for?
- How high are they ranking in the SERPs (search engine results pages)?
- What are the search volumes and how competitive are they?
And if they’ve written an article on the topic you’ve chosen, don’t despair. It’s actually a golden opportunity… make sure yours has more detail, more useful information for the reader. If you do this, in time your article will likely outrank theirs.
We’ll go into more detail about researching competitors’ keywords another time.
