I’ve written a lot about marketing in the Reality Blog over the past two years… using social media, what channels work best for different businesses, and so on.
If you’re working alone as a freelancer, then you’ll quickly discover every day only has 24 hours.
So you need to maximize your marketing efforts.
With this in mind, there’s a form of marketing which every freelancer should embrace. And I would argue it’s absolutely critical to long-term success. What is it?
SEO (Search Engine Optimization).
The Role of Your Website
To understand where SEO fits in your marketing plan, first we should understand the role a website plays for any small business.
Your website is your shopfront. It’s the place where prospects and clients go to better understand your products or services… very similar to the role a physical store plays.
Imagine you sell irrigation equipment from a physical shop. Prospects and clients come into your shop to browse, ask questions, and hopefully buy products.
Now imagine you open an online store selling irrigation equipment, in place of a physical store. You need to provide the same services to prospects and clients… help them find what they’re looking for, answer their questions, and make sales.
So the website is critical to your business. It’s your virtual shopfront.
Your website should form the core of your business. You own it and control the content. It’s the place where you inform prospects, educate them, make sales, offer courses, and so on.
It’s the unmovable rock in the river, surrounded by the ever-changing currents of social media.
The ultimate aim of your marketing plan should be to maximize visitors to your website, then convert them to customers.
