Roving Report: Three Ways to Make Money from Your Blog

Did you know you can make money from a blog?

Some high-level pro bloggers earn six- and seven-figure annual incomes from their blogs, but to do that, you need to take the right steps.

Heather Robson walked us through three of the many ways to earn a good income from a blog. You can watch her excitement as she shares her love for, and knowledge of, blogging in the webinar recording HERE.

Even if you don’t plan to earn money from your blog, Heather believes blogging is a smart choice for writers

Why Blog?

It’s simple. Regular blogging makes you a better writer.

To be a writer, you have to write, and you have to write regularly. Daily, in fact. “The act of writing every day, regularly, does make you a better writer over time,” Heather said.

Blogging gives you an automatic way to flex those writing muscles.

Another effective way to improve your writing is to get regular feedback, and blogging does that for you as well. Between comments on the blog and social media, email comments and questions, and social sharing, you’ll get loads of feedback.

This feedback helps you see which topics resonate and the structure your audience responds to, and will also help you identify weaknesses in your writing so you can improve in those areas.

Blogging forces you to plan ahead. Whether you blog daily, weekly, or biweekly, if you want those posts to be polished when you hit the publish button, you’ll have to do some planning.

As a blogger, you’ll need to come up with new ideas. Blogging will “turn you into someone who’s constantly aware of the idea generation process, and this will help you write everything better,” Heather explained.

“Being able to come up with ideas, and figure out how to frame the idea so it will excite the audience is a tremendously powerful skill.”

Even if you only improve a tiny bit with each post, that incremental improvement adds up. At the end of a year, “you’ll see a tremendous amount of growth in your writing skills,” Heather promised.

Susanna Perkins

Susanna was dragged back, kicking and screaming, into freelancing after losing her job in the banking meltdown in March, '09. One 3-month stint in an appalling temp job persuaded her to get serious about establishing herself as web writer. In March, 2012, she moved to a small town in Panama with her husband and three small dogs. After enjoying the writer's life in the culture of "buenas" and "mañana" for 2-1/2 years, she's returned to the US. At least for now.

  • Susanna, This is a great summary of Heather’s video. I enjoyed watching her video but well-written print really does it for me and you captured that quite efficiently and completely.

It’s nice to have this written resource to come back from time to time. Awesome job. Thanks.
