How to Create Instant Authority with a Professional Workflow Process – Part 1

business leadership teamwork power and confidence concept

What Do You Want from Me?

Have you ever had an interaction online with a new connection and found yourself desperately wanting to ask, What do you want from me?”

Those conversations that start out with your new connection saying, “Hi — thanks for connecting with me!”

And you respond, “You’re welcome. What do you do?”

And they answer, “Oh, I’m an internet researcher… graphic designer… web developer.” Awkward pause. And then, one of these dreaded, useless phrases…

  • “Would you like to know more?”
  • “Do you use these kinds of services?”
  • “What do you think?”

That last one really irritates. What do you mean, what do I think? Do you want me as a client, would you like me to make a referral, do you want to set up a Zoom call?

What do you want me to do!?!

Conversational Failure

Those types of discussions can drive people crazy. They happen because one or both people don’t really know what they want.

Are you committing this professional faux pas?

Are your new connections left wondering, Just what does this strange copywriting person want from me?

Fortunately, there’s a way to avoid this awkwardness.

You Need a Professional Onboarding and Workflow Process

When I first heard about the concept of having a process, I didn’t really understand what it meant. Then, when I started to get a grasp on it, I didn’t feel that I had enough authority to create it.

So, first things first… Just what is a professional onboarding and workflow process? (Don’t worry, it’s easier than it sounds!)

Your onboarding process simply consists of the steps you take with any new connection. Think of it like the kitchen in a busy high-end restaurant. Has that table finished their salads yet? Does that steak need to go on the grill to be ready in time? Is this dish ready for plating?

Your onboarding process needs to have the same kind of clear, useful direction. And that means you need a little information from your new connection.

  • Really enjoyed this article and I’m looking forward to Part 2! Even though I’m nowhere near this stage, it’s really good info to know. Making contact with people is one of my biggest fears. Anything that gives me a formula (or an idea for a formula) is gold for me! I like “following directions” – most of the time! When I’m doing something I’ve never done before, it’s kind of a safety net and I don’t feel quite as nervous going out on that limb.
